What features made a car a luxury car in the classic car era?

I was at a classic car show recently with mostly 1950s and early 1960s cars, and looking at them today, I can't really tell what separated something like a Cadillac from a Chevy Bel Air in terms of luxury features. What made something like a Cadillac a luxury car?
