Learning how to drive with a manual gearbox this coming Saturday. What exactly is a "stall" and what should I do to avoid it/get out of it?

A friend of a friend is going to teach me how to drive manual and I wanted to be a bit prepared for it. I think I'm familiar enough with the whole fully-engage-the-clutch-before-shifting bit. And I've been brushing up on the sticky note in the sidebox there. With manual cars, I'd always heard of stalls and such.

To that effect, I have the following questions for you fine folks here:

  • What exactly is a "stall"? Mechanically, what is happening when the car/engine stalls?
  • What usually causes one? I've often heard (and I think I've been in a car once when it happened) that they're likely to happen at red lights, when the driver forgot to shift to neutral.
  • What do I do to fix it/get out of it?

So, yeah, forgive the ignorance but I appreciate you taking the time to read and giving some advice. I've had a goal of owning a proper, inexpensive, two-door, FR sports car before I'm forty and I figured I should learn how to drive manually as soon as I can. Thanks in advance!
