When racing manual, how should you shift?

Hi guys, I hope this is the correct subreddit to be posting this in. When I track my v8 commodore with a t56 manual gearbox i heel toe downshift to rev match the gears. I drove with a marshal who "tutors" newer drivers and he told me the way I up shifting will f#$k the gearbox real quick. I basically come off the accelerator clutch it to the floor, shift quickly into next gear but I don't force it let it go in itself let clutch out reasonably quick whilst going back to the accelerator. Is this right? I didn't have a chance to ask him to explain afterwards. Thanks!
