I always hear about the huge changes in engine design and EPA requirements that went into effect in the 70s that caused huge drops in engine performance, but never understood what actual changes manufacturers did.
Anyone familiar with what are some of the major changes that were made to cut emissions, particularly the older engines transitioning from late 60s to 70s, and then into the 80s?
Beyond general interest, I'm curious about how realistic it'd be to buy an 80s camaro or something of the like and rework the engine by pulling the smog tech or uprating with modern bits.
(I'm in a state that does not do emission testing)
