[Discussion] DAE get frustrated when auto enthusiasm is associated with materialism?

This is something that’s always annoyed me, but I’ve never talked about it. Auto enthusiasts often seem to be associated with and/or accused of being materialistic.

I’ve had many friends, coworkers, and family members self-righteously explain to me how they don’t need / are not interested in “fancy” cars, suggesting that I’m wrong to be. It also seems common for people to measure someone’s modesty by their car. For example, I’ve heard: “Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t even care about money, he has billions and still drives an Acura TL!”.

On top of this, these are usually the same people who laugh and say “in that car?!” when I explain how I took my drab-looking NA Impreza to the track over the weekend. I’d argue that most car enthusiasts would rather muscle a scrappy E36 M3 around the track than roll up to a nightclub in a brand new one.

Does this bother, or even happen to anyone else?
