Burnt clutch in 5k miles. ADVICE NEEDED

So if you couldn't tell, I purchased my first manual car a while ago. The only practice I had was about 2 hours in a friends car. The clutch was brand new and I burnt it out really quickly. I'm looking for some tips on to prevent crazy fast slippage and so on. Dropping $2k on a new clutch on a car I just bought sucks ass. Before any of you say, "should have bought an automatic!" I've always wanted to learn stick, but unfortunately, it's the hard way.

THINGS I MAY HAVE BEEN DOING WRONG: * Starting in 2nd gear instead of 1st. (At a light or stop sign, not the ignition) * "Coasting" when approaching a red light, and choosing the correct gear to continue moving if it turned green. * Keeping the clutch pushed down while waiting and moving up slowly at a stop sign or bumper to bumper traffic.

There are probably other factors, but these are the ones that come to mind. Please don't be so harsh, I'm new to the clutch and would like to become better.
